Meatball Marinara Subway -- £2.40
Review posted: 31/12/2005Very tasty, but very soggy. This is one of the more novel sandwiches Subway make and despite the results being mixed, overall the taste is good and certainly one to try.
The clue is in the name - this sandwich consists of meatballs in a rich sauce alongside the usual cheese and salad. The meatballs themselves are fine as far as quality is concerned, and despite the occasional bit of gristle they are perfectly adequate. They are literally smothered in a rich sauce which really adds to the flavour and makes the meatballs themselves much more palatable and the whole combination of flavours is very good indeed. The usual cheese also complements the meatballs and sauce well, and warmed up the taste is very pleasant.
There are problems however. The sauce eventually seeps into the bread making it very soggy and often causing it to fall apart, and for some reason the soaked bread doesn't actually taste very nice, which is a shame. When the bread has fallen apart it is also somewhat tricky to eat the sandwich without anything holding it together. Finally, with the exception of tomato, salad doesn't really go with the meatballs; lettuce leaves a bitter aftertaste, and yet without the salad the whole taste is a bit bland. Salad in this sandwich is somewhat of a mixed blessing.
This is a very tasty sandwich. However, it is also heavily flawed in it's design and doesn't really combine well with the salad that most people enjoy in their sandwich. Without the salad it really isn't substantial enough either. Finally, do eat it when it's warm, somewhat unsurprisingly this sandwich is not at all nice when cold.
