Chicken & Avocado

Review posted: 10/01/2006Different, tasty and well priced. A sandwich which has a delightfully unique taste and a very good price, which suffers from only a few minor flaws.
When both the fillings in this sandwich are present in their proper amounts this sandwich is excellent. A slight problem I have found is that the amount can fluctuate wildly between purchases. However, based on the assumption that they are present in proper amounts, this sandwich is very worthy of 4 stars.
The chicken is tender and tasty and not at all watery. It is spread out right to the edges and would make a hefty filling in it's own right. Similarly, the avocado is nice, soft and with a good flavour it goes nicely with the chicken. It can vary between larger and smaller pieces, and overall I think it's nicer when in the smaller chunks since it can't overpower the chicken.
The real star of this sandwich though is the mayonnaise which complements and combines the fillings so well. I suspect it is the usual Tesco mayonnaise, but they have given it a real twist with the addition of basil. This herb really adds something special, not only with the distinct taste it has, but it fuses so well with the chicken and avocado. Occasionally, a mouthful can yield a bit too much basil, but when it's not lumped together it works very well indeed.
The bread is a bit of a letdown, the usual bland and slightly bitter malted brown has little to offer here, but at least it doesn't harm the overall flavour.
I was not expecting much with this sandwich, but the inclusion of the basil really makes a good sandwich from what could have been a very ordinary one. And to make it even better, this sandwich has a very fair price tag.
