Chicken Salad
Tesco -- £1.45

Saved by the mayonnaise.

This is a very mixed sandwich, with some common problems, but overall it has a nice flavour and some decent ingredients which warrant 3 stars.

The chicken is actually quite nice. It's in reasonable sized chunks and certainly has plenty of flavour, and more importantly it doesn't taste at all processed. However, there is just not enough of it. I can't understand the logic of making a chicken salad sandwich with a minimal amount of chicken.

Fortunately, the somewhat sparse amount of chicken is partially rectified by the excellent combination of the chicken and the mayonnaise. The mayonnaise itself is not the most exciting, it has a mild flavour and lacks any real kick, but it goes so nicely with the chicken that they both benefit from the amalgam of flavours.

The lettuce is a bit of a letdown. There is normally too little of it and it certainly isn't fresh and crunchy, which means the whole sandwich can be a bit limp. The tomato is better, often being fresh and with a sensible amount of juice it goes nicely with the mayonnaise as well and of course adds it's own distinctive flavour.

The bread is pretty ordinary, and again it's too thin, but a pleasant malted bread is refreshingly subtle, especially when the filling doesn't have the strongest flavours.

So not a bad sandwich by any means, but you get the feeling it could have been a lot better if more thought had gone into it. However, the low price is certainly attractive.
