Chicken & Smoked Ham Tesco -- £1.49
Review posted: 31/12/2005Does exactly what is says on the packet. A sandwich which doesn't have gourmet ingredients, or any radical fillings, but it manages to be original and tasty at the same time.
This sandwich is pretty much the same as the "Chicken Salad," so it shares the identical problems of not enough chicken and limp lettuce, but it also features the excellent tomato and pleasing mayonnaise. The only real addition is plenty of thinly sliced smoked ham.
The ham itself is quite clearly the processed variety. Processed meats or ones with added water are not automatically bad, but it does mean their flavours are neutralised to a certain extent and the danger is they can come across as bland. However, despite the ham being processed, it certainly isn't bland or lacking flavour and really adds something to this sandwich.
It doesn't exactly have a strong taste, but with every bite of the sandwich, it has a subtle smokey flavour that is very noticeable. It goes very nicely with the mayonnaise in particular and gives the whole sandwich a bit more bite. A minor drawback is that it is normally stuffed right into the middle of the sandwich, and in a neat pile, so it doesn't go all the way to the crusts. The bread is the usual malted brown, which again is fine here.
Overall this is a good sandwich. It combines the positive qualities of the "Chicken Salad" with the pleasant flavour of the ham to create a tasty, although hardly exciting sandwich. It is also pretty good value for money.
