Prawn Mayonnaise Tesco -- £1.18
Review posted: 31/12/2005Apparently, this includes prawns. This is a rather sub par sandwich, mostly because it has such a weak flavour that the main filling can barely be tasted at all.
If you're going to make a prawn sandwich it is crucial that the prawns are tasty, have texture and bite and go nicely with whatever else you put them with. Sadly, here that just doesn't seem to have happened.
The prawns are small and somewhat sparse. They have a very mild flavour, and it's a real struggle to realise you are actually eating prawns at all. Not only this, but they are chewy and lack the hearty texture and bit of crunch that can make all the difference with good prawns.
It doesn't help that they are lathered in a mayonnaise which is really far too rich and creamy for the sort of prawns on offer. Despite this mayonnaise tasting okay on it's own, it really only serves to cover up the flavour of the prawns even more.
The normally tasty oatmeal bread is itself subdued a bit by this mayonnaise. However, it still has a pleasant flavour which goes fairly well with the filling.
It's not that this sandwich tastes bad as such, just that it fails to offer any real flavour at all, save for a mild fishy one. The prawns are supposed to be the core ingredient, but they are weak and overwhelmed and it makes the whole thing rather disappointing.
