Smoked Ham & Cheddar

Review posted: 31/12/2005Good, nothing more. This is by no means a spectacular sandwich, but one with some pleasant ingredients which go nicely together. It does have a few common problems though.
The ham in this sandwich is really rather good. I cannot believe it is the same smoked ham that is in the "Chicken & Smoked Ham," because it has a much stronger flavour. It has a smokey flavour which doesn't taste synthetic or processed, and manages to be strong without being pungent or overpowering. There are a few good sized slices of it as well.
The cheddar is somewhat mild, but goes well with the ham. It seems as though the cheese has picked up a smoked tinge from the ham and this really adds to the flavour. Similarly, there are some nice thick slices of it in the sandwich.
The malted brown bread is okay, if a touch bitter, which doesn't really go with the filling, but it's certainly not enough to ruin the overall taste. The filling is also rarely up to the edges which means the rather dry and bitter crusts are very apparent, and the taste isn't particularly pleasant.
There is also a woeful lack of appropriate condiment. There is mayonnaise is this sandwich, but as I have mentioned before the mayonnaise Tesco frequently use has a pleasant flavour, but it needs complementary ingredients to accentuate it. Here it just doesn't go at all well with the ham or the cheese, and a decent light mustard would have been far more appropriate.
So overall this is a good sandwich. The fillings go together nicely and it is certainly an attractive price, but it does have a touch of blandness about it and the flavours are never really given a chance to impress us.
