Smoked Ham & Mustard Tesco -- £1.05
Review posted: 31/12/2005Horridly average. This is a sandwich which is too plain and simple without having decent ingredients, and therefore it is largely unsuccessful.
For such a simple sandwich to work, it is crucial that the filling is tasty and moreish, sadly the ham in this sandwich just isn't. I don't know why the ham in Tesco sandwiches seems to vary so much in quality, and frustratingly this doesn't seem to be the good quality ham from the "Ham & Cheddar," but rather the fairly ordinary processed variety.
The ham is chewy, watery and rather stringy. The flavour it has is reminiscent of ham, but is certainly isn't the delicious, lightly smoked, farmhouse taste that is absolutely necessary for this sandwich. There is also far too much of it and it's crammed into the middle of the bread making the sandwich rather a chore to eat.
The mustard is better, and goes nicely with the ham. It is rather mild, and I suspect if it were used with a stronger flavoured filling it would be somewhat ineffective, but it works well enough here. It is a pity this mustard wasn't used in the "Ham & Cheddar" sandwich because it would have fitted in well there.
The bread is a fairly standard white which is soft enough, but it does come across as a bit dry and has a noticeably sweet aftertaste, which accentuates the manufactured flavour of the ham even more.
For the price it is, one cannot expect amazing things from this sandwich, but even what is offered is rather disappointing. It is rather like something you could whip up very quickly at home, but then if you can make it at home, why would you want to buy it?
