Tuna & Sweetcorn Tesco -- £0.97
Review posted: 31/12/2005To get more, you need to pay more. Overall this is rather a disappointment and doesn't really have anything to compete against the competition with, save for a low price.
For one thing, although the tuna isn't a paste as such, but it does have a distinct lack of texture, even though there are noticeable pieces in it. I suspect part of this might be because there is rather too much mayonnaise mixed in with it. This has another affect that the taste of the tuna is really rather too mild. Although it's certainly present it, like in so many similar sandwiches comes across as a generic fish flavour, rather than tuna.
The sweetcorn actually adds to this problem. It's not saying much for the strength of the tuna when it is more or less overpowered by something as bland as sweetcorn, especially considering the rather small portion of it here. The flavour of the sweetcorn certainly isn't the strongest, and yet when it collaborates with the tuna, it's always the sweetcorn which comes out on top.
The malted brown bread isn't particularly good with these fillings since the slight bitterness is accentuated by the sweetcorn, and even though the mayonnaise adds moisture to the tuna it doesn't do the same to the bread.
Really there are better alternatives to this. I am yet to find a high-street tuna sandwich that is entirely satisfactory because it's something that's quite easy to get wrong. But this comes nowhere near some of the more acceptable offerings and despite the low price, there is an undeniable blandness to this sandwich which doesn't make it worth the money.
