Chicken & Bacon Waitrose -- £2.00
Review posted: 31/12/2005Waitrose remind us they're a supermarket. This is certainly a sandwich to consider as it has many good points, but it does come across as distinctly ordinary and lacks any remarkable features.
The chicken is very good, cut into nice thick pieces, and occasionally into strips, it has a pleasing yet somewhat subdued taste, and pleasant texture which makes it rather moreish. A good sized portion of it also means the filling in this sandwich is fairly generous. The same cannot really be said for the bacon, which despite having a delightful sweet-cured flavour, really suffers from a measly serving, with the odd piece scattered around in the sandwich.
Due to this, the chicken and bacon rarely combine flavours, which is a shame. However, the inclusion of fresh and juicy tomato is a welcome one, and as with the chicken the proportion of tomato is perfect.
A small disappointment is the "Dijon mustard mayonnaise", which features in this sandwich. It isn't particularly noticeable, and although its flavour is certainly pleasant enough, it might as well have been standard mayonnaise because the taste is still rather bland and uninteresting.
So overall, this is a decent attempt and the combined flavours of the fillings are good. But it does have some rather frustrating weaknesses, and ones which could easily be avoided or improved upon.
