Salt Beef & Horseradish
Pret a Manger -- £2.90

Undeniably impressive.

This is a sandwich which isn't particularly novel or exciting, but it shows that quality ingredients and decent portions will nearly always combine to make a very good sandwich.

The roast beef is obviously of good quality. Its flavour is reasonably strong and quite tasty. It's quite fair to say that although the portion is generous, the slices are a little too thin which means it lacks a bit of necessary texture, but this is a minor criticism.

The salad in this sandwich is very good indeed, and the combination of the different element really works well. The tomatoes are unsurprisingly fresh with plenty of thick slices, and the same can be said of the spinach, the portion of which is ideal. However, what is really nice about this sandwich is that they have got the portion of red onion exactly right. Too much and it overpowers; too little and it's wasted - here the balance is just right so that it complements without becoming too noticeable.

The horseradish mayonnaise is tasty if a little on the weak side, but it's still perfectly pleasant. The standard Pret malted wholegrain also works very well here and combines nicely with all the fillings.

Despite a few minor niggles, this is a very good sandwich indeed. While it's a little on the expensive side the quality of the ingredients is very apparent, and this just about makes up for the price. The overall flavour isn't exactly mind-blowing, but the combined positive traits of the fillings really do shine through.
