Ham Salad

Packed and bitter.

This is just one of many sandwiches that assumes portion size is all that matters. There's no doubt that for a "healthy" sandwich it packs a lot of filling. However, there's no getting around the fact that the whole thing tastes rather cheap and nasty. This is in the "Healthy Living" range.

The portion of ham in this sandwich verges on daft. It's that processed kind, although its flavour isn't actually too bad. But there's just too much of it, and it becomes somewhat of a chore to munch through. It's also the case that the ham contains quite a lot of water, so having so much of it makes the whole thing rather soggy.

The biggest problem this sandwich has though is that it doesn't have any mayonnaise or dressing in it. This means that the serving of lettuce (which is also far too big) comes across as rather bitter. The ham can occasionally mask this problem, but the tomato and cucumber servings are too small to add any real flavour, and they are largely subdued by the bitter lettuce anyway.

The softgrain bread is actually rather good; it's fluffy and soft and has quite a noticeable flavour. But it too has to compete against the bitter lettuce and the watery ham.

This sandwich just goes to show that most sandwiches benefit some form of condiment, however minor the serving may be. If you remove that for the sake of being healthy, and replace it with loads of a healthier filling, the results are rarely pleasing.
