Pastrami & Emmental Tesco -- £2.50
Review posted: 23/10/2006Nice, if your hobby is chewing. This is a sandwich that just goes to show that quantity is not the same as quality. Despite it looking impressive, this is actually a rather cheap-tasting sandwich. This is in the "Finest" range.
Plenty of pastrami in a sandwich is usually a good thing, however, in this one it's one of its biggest problems. I often think that pastrami is better accompanying another meat, and this sandwich somewhat proves my theory. When you have a portion this big all it does is remind you that the general flavour of pastrami isn't that moreish, and that it's also an extremely chewy meat.
On the other hand, the serving of Emmental is so small that it barely registers. Again, pastrami benefits from strong supporting flavours, and due to the size of the cheese portion the two just don't bond properly.
The mustard mayonnaise is okay, but when you combine it, the pastrami, and the rather musty-tasting rye bread without an appropriate milder flavour, the overall taste isn't actually a particularly nice one.
This sort of Deli-style sandwich is difficult to get right, principally because the flavours are all so strong. This one fails because it never gets the balance right between these flavours, and because it's actually quite a chore to eat.
