Egg & Tomato
Pret a Manger -- £1.80

Great bread, wrong sandwich.

As with most Pret sandwiches this is one that's packed with plenty of good quality fillings, and is well assembled. But the choice of bread is an odd one, and it actually undermines the sandwich as a whole.

The egg mayonnaise used is the one that features is many Pret sandwiches, and the portion of it here is ideal. What has always impressed me about this egg mayonnaise is that is manages to be strongly flavoured, without seeming artificial or sickly. It is also one of the few egg mayonnaises that is consistently seasoned correctly.

The portion of tomato is also good, and the slices are nice and thick as well. On occasion the combination of the egg and the tomato do make the bread a little soggy, but this is a minor complaint. Naturally the flavours of the egg and the tomato go together beautifully.

What I can't get my head around though is why rye bread is used in this sandwich. While there's no doubt that the egg and tomato combination produces a pleasing and relatively strong flavour, rye bread is always extraordinarily strong when it comes to flavour. The result of this is that it smothers the rich taste of the egg and the succulence of the tomato, and occasionally renders the sandwich rather musty.

It's such a shame when something as simple as the choice of bread undermines a sandwich, but this is one of those times. While I cannot doubt the overall quality of this sandwich, a change in the bread would make a dramatic improvement.
