Classic Tuna Pret a Manger -- £2.20
Review posted: 24/11/2006It's all about quality. This is a sandwich that shows how well Pret can 'do simple'. But more importantly, it demonstrates that high quality versions of old favourites can work just as well as gimmicky or flashy sandwiches. This same filling is also available in a baguette.
The pieces of tuna in the mayonnaise aren't particularly big, but they are bursting with flavour. The portion is also very good. The mayonnaise itself is also interesting because it's actually rather mild, but the subtle hints of the herbs it has been infused with come through very well indeed.
The quality of the salad is also very good, although there is perhaps slightly too much lettuce. However, this doesn't distract too much. The slices of cucumber are a shade on the thin side, but at least they retain enough crunchy texture. It's also good to see a tuna sandwich that is properly seasoned, and this is one of those.
The wholegrain bread is also good, and combines surprisingly well with the tuna. I'm normally quite sceptical about darker brown breads (as opposed to lighter ones like oatmeal) with fish fillings, but this one works well here.
So while there's nothing specific or spectacular to write home about regarding this sandwich, it's certainly a very good purchase. It's also around the same price as many supermarket 'gourmet' versions, which makes it even more attractive.
