Review posted: 14/01/2007Big and beautiful. This is the more expensive version of this sandwich that Tesco offer - the cheaper one is in a roll. This one is in the "Finest" range, and since sandwiches in that range tend to come and go I hope this is one of the ones that stays. It really is a terrific sandwich, and the price isn't bad either.
First of all, this sandwich is absolutely packed with filling. The pieces of sausage are thick and there are plenty of them. However, it's not ordinary cheap sandwich sausage; it's rich, tasty and tinged with herbs. The egg mayonnaise is also good, and most importantly the serving is the right size. This isn't another 'Breakfast' smothered with so much egg that you can't taste anything else.
The portion of bacon is slightly smaller but its used to good effect. It is smoked with apple wood, which gives it a very strong flavour and too much of it would be harmful. Thankfully though the portion is sensible and the fusion of the bacon and egg in particular is terrific. There are also a few slices of fresh tomato, as well as a sensible portion of tangy tomato relish. Both of these go well with the other ingredients and don't impose themselves too much. The only thing about this sandwich that's a little ordinary is the malted brown bread, which is a little bitter. But there's so much flavour in the rest of the sandwich that you don't notice.
Overall, this is just a wonderful sandwich. It's packed with flavour as well as being packed with filling. What's more, at this price it's a lot cheaper than many gourmet versions and it certainly matches most of them in terms of quality and quantity.
