Sausage, Bacon & Egg Tesco -- £2.30
Review posted: 28/02/2007Cheap, but not that cheerful. Considering this is a triple pack, there's no denying that this sandwich represents good value for money, at least insofar as the amount of food is concerned. However, while overall it is a solid effort, there are some quality and flavour issues.
The portion sizes of all the fillings are generally good, but at the same time their balance is a bit off. The egg mayonnaise is decent; it actually has quite a strong and pleasant flavour, but it's also a little watery. The bacon is the one that features in so many other Tesco sandwiches, and as in the 'Egg & Bacon' the combination of the two is fine. However, I still think this bacon goes better in sandwiches that have actual mayonnaise in them, because it stops its sweet flavour seeming too strong.
The sausage slices have a good strong flavour, but it's a shame that their texture is rather rubbery. On occasion this does mean the sandwich is a bit of a chore to eat, especially as there is perhaps slightly too much sausage in it. The malted brown bread isn't terrific, and it's a trifle bitter, but the other flavours help mask this to a certain degree. There's also a rather basic tomato relish, which provides a welcome break from ketchup, but it is also a little too sweet.
So while there are better sandwiches of this type on the market (Waitrose sell one of them), this certainly isn't a bad offering. However, there are some quality issues with a couple of the fillings, but if you're just looking for plenty of food you can probably ignore this fact.
