Wholly Mackerel
Pret a Manger -- £2.85

Complicated construction, simple flavour.

This is another Pret sandwich that suffers from overkill to some degree. There's no doubting the quality on offer here, and the flavour as a whole isn't bad. But there's too much going on for the relatively simple return to be entirely acceptable.

The mackerel itself is actually very good indeed. It's moist, tender and absolutely bursting with flavour. The serving is also very generous, and for these reasons it dominates the sandwich in every respect. But that's pretty much all you get; a sandwich that tastes of mackerel and nothing else. The problem is that there are plenty of other things in it that you barely notice.

There's Pret's egg mayonnaise, which is usually pretty strong, but it barely registers here. It's not like the portion is small either, and it's such a shame that it doesn't come through well because egg and mackerel combine very well. There's also plenty of rocket, tomato slices and horseradish mayonnaise, none of which are that noticeable. The malted wheatgrain sounds like an ideal bread, but it too is dominated by the fish.

As good as I think Pret generally are, sometimes they do go a bit off the rails. It's telling that even their weaker sandwiches still taste pretty good and offer decent value for money in terms of the amount of filling. But sometimes they do need to tone things down a bit, and this is one of those times.
