Chicken & Chorizo
Tesco -- £2.50

Something different, and nicely priced.

This is the sort of sandwich you normally expect retailers to slap a big price tag on - after it, it has a 'foreign-sounding' ingredient in it. But what's nice about this one isn't just that it tastes rather good, but that it competes handsomely with many mid-price offerings. It's a limited edition, but I hope Tesco put it into full production soon.

First of all, there is plenty of chicken and the pieces are of a good size. Its flavour is as expected, not too mild and not too strong, but there's nothing unpleasant about it. However, what really makes this sandwich work is the fusion of the chicken and the chorizo. I've had a few other sandwiches with chorizo in them, and quite often the serving just isn't big enough, resulting in a reduction in flavour. Not only is the serving here good, with plenty of pretty thick slices, its flavour has a welcome strength to it.

This sandwich also features a tomato mayonnaise, which is a nice touch and certainly goes well with these fillings. It's something that I'd like to see in other 'Spanish'-influenced sandwiches. There's a serving of lettuce that's rather too small, and I don't think it's the best thing for this sandwich either - something a bit more exotic perhaps. And the malted brown bread is just plain wrong - it doesn't work with the fillings at all.

But overall, this is a different and highly recommendable sandwich. It tastes very good and is packed with plenty of solid quality fillings. And it's even nicely priced - introduce it please, Tesco.
