It's always good to find sandwiches where you can see the effort that has gone into sourcing the best ingredients. This sandwich is of undoubted quality, and yet it is let down by stingy portions. It is currently a limited edition sandwich in the 'Organic' range.
There's a richness to the egg mayonnaise in this sandwich that you don't find in many others. The pieces of egg are big and chunky, and there's a good balance between the white and yolk portions. The mayonnaise used is creamy but light, and the amount featured is ideal. The only problem is that the serving just isn't very good; it barely goes up to the crusts and is spread around very thinly indeed.
It's a similar story with the watercress. Sometimes when cheap watercress is used it can taste overly bitter and not nice at all. This is clearly good quality stuff, and adds both strong flavours and a welcome variation in texture to the sandwich. But, just like the egg mayonnaise, the serving of it is disappointingly mediocre. The sandwich has at least been seasoned properly though, and the malted brown bread appears to be a step up from the usual stuff Tesco use - though it's not the best I've ever had.
This sandwich tastes good - there's no doubt about that. The quality shines through in every mouthful, but so too does the mean nature of the portions. It's not just that the portions are small; it's that the sandwich costs quite a lot for rather little too.
