Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese
Tesco -- £2.50

Fishily good.

This is the sort of sandwich supermarkets rarely do well, and yet for the most part this one is certainly a success. It achieves a good balance between quality and quantity, and the results are pleasing. It is currently a limited edition sandwich.

I always like to see a good portion of salmon in this sort of sandwich, not least because it can often be overwhelmed by other things, and this one provides such a serving. This isn't necessarily the best smoked salmon I've ever seen in a sandwich, but its flavour is strong and its texture has that all-important 'melt in the mouth' quality.

The cream cheese is very strongly flavoured, and I'd venture to say there's slightly too much of it here. But it's not sickly or overpowering as such - just a bit too noticeable. There's also a nice lemon mayonnaise used here, which naturally goes well with everything - though the extreme flavour of the cream cheese can clash with it on occasion. And the malted/oatmeal bread is a great choice for this sort of filling.

It's always odd when retailers have limited edition products that are so much better than the majority of their normal ones, and this is one of those times. It shows that Tesco can do quality, and all for a pretty reasonable price too. This is one they should seriously considering putting into full production.
