Meatball Melt McDonalds -- £2.49
Review posted: 26/12/2007A very nice surprise. There's something about meatball sandwiches that I've never entirely trusted. The Subway 'Meatball Marinara' seems to be pretty popular with this site's readers, but I really do think it's quite a flawed product. So it's rather nice to come across a version like this that seems to iron out quite a lot of the traditional kinks.
On occasion, the McDonalds sandwich range has been blighted with mediocre amounts of filling. To their credit most of their range is good, but ingredient quantity is an issue I have raised before. So it really is good to see such a generous serving of meatballs in this sandwich. The meatballs themselves are not particularly big, and it must have been very tempting just to shove a single line of them in the middle and finish the product there. Instead, McDonalds squeeze two parallel lines of meatballs into the sandwich; it really is quite stuff. Their flavour is actually rather good too. They aren't overly spiced, and their texture is nicely in between mushy and crispy.
The tomato marinara sauce is actually very good, and the serving is just right. One of my complaints about the Subway model is the sogginess that comes with their excess of marinara sauce, but McDonalds get that right. Its flavour is also pleasantly strong. There's also a nice serving of lettuce, some rather tasty mozzarella cheese, and the crispy bread rolls McDonalds use are ideal to prevent sandwich sagging.
So this really is a nice product. Perhaps the meatballs themselves are not the best in terms of quality, but they taste nice, there are plenty of them, and the sandwich as a whole isn't bad value either.
