Review posted: 29/02/2008Amazing, for a while. It is often said that first impressions can be deceiving, and this is a sandwich that pretty much proves that phrase to be correct. Overall, it would be wrong to say that the sandwich was anywhere near bad. It's a good sandwich - period. But your experience of the first bite will differ dramatically from your experience of the last.
As we have come to expect from Pret, the ingredients here are first class. The tomatoes, peppers, cucumber and rocket are all delightfully fresh, crunchy and plentiful. The serving of marinated chicken is relatively generous, and the sandwich is rounded off with a touch of oregano and some spicy yoghurt dressing.
And on first bite, this sandwich tastes as good as it looks. The sweetness of the peppers and tomatoes combines beautifully, while the cucumber and the rocket give it real bite. And then it hits you; you can't taste the chicken. The first impression of this sandwich is of a flavour explosion, but it's not the flavour of all the ingredients working together as they should. What you actually end up with is a really good salad sandwich with slight undertones of chicken. The oregano is also extremely prominent. You'll come to the last mouthful both impressed and strangely fed up at once, as the flavour is so in your face this sandwich can become a bit of a chore to eat.
This is yet another sandwich that has issues with balance. I'd love to see more sandwiches with peppers, oregano and really fresh tomatoes. But these things always need to be the supporting act, rather than the main attraction.
