Prawn, Crayfish & Salmon Tesco -- £2.50
Review posted: 28/04/2008An understanding of fish. This might not be the best sandwich in the world, but it does at least demonstrate a level of understanding about which ingredients go together best. Its problems have nothing to do with its flavour combinations, which are quite delightful. This is a 'Limited Edition' sandwich.
Tesco prawns have never been the biggest, or the strongest tasting. But the portion here is good enough to compensate for their slightly weak flavour. The crayfish portion is perhaps a shade on the large side, and can seem a touch bitter on occasion as a result. But even this is smoothed out by the combination of the prawns and the perfectly ample portion of tasty salmon. Three fish that go well together, then.
Salad comes from the inclusion of crunchy rocket and red chard; there is a bit too much of the latter, but it's a minor problem. And everything is topped off by a subtle and mild lemon mayonnaise; one that actually tastes like lemon and not soap, as they often can. And the white bread with poppy seeds is a welcome touch.
There are some quality issues here, and the balance isn't always right. But there's nothing here that doesn't belong, and that's the significant factor in its success.
