Salt Beef, Emmental & Rocket Tesco -- £2.50
Review posted: 28/04/2008Strength is an understatement. I often use the phrase 'bursting with flavour' when describing sandwiches, and usually that's a good thing for me to say. Those words would certainly apply to this sandwich. In fact, the only thing that can be said against it is that it takes the principle to extremes. This is a 'Limited Edition' sandwich.
It can never be said that salt beef is a mild ingredient, and this sandwich is absolutely stuffed with it. And I mean stuffed! It's also quite nice salt beef to, so it's not overly chewy and is nicely cooked. There's a liberal portion of Emmental cheese, and its mild but creamy flavour bonds nicely with that of the beef.
Rocket is, I think, the ideal salad option for beef sandwiches. Tesco always tend to put a bit too much of it in their sandwiches, but it's not a major problem as such. Then there's a tasty mustard and some dill dressing. However, quite why someone thought both these condiments were needed, I have no idea. Both are strong, both are equally complimentary, but this sandwich just doesn't need both of them. Their flavours fight for attention, and end up smothering some of the slighter flavours in the sandwich. The oatmeal bread is a nice choice, mind you.
So, either drop the mustard or the dill - my choice would be the latter - and this could be something quite special. As it stands it's very good, but not quite brilliant.
