Tuna Nicoise Tesco -- £2.50
Review posted: 09/07/2008Not as fantastic as it looks. Some of the Tesco 'Finest' sandwiches are stunning creations, packed with tasty fillings of outstanding quality. There are also some which are overpriced, bland and lacking in flavour. This one fits in the middle of these two extremes.
The tuna is disappointingly ordinary. That's not to say it's bad, and it's a good deal chunkier and tastier than the rather watery stuff you get in the normal range sandwiches. But it just isn't as packed with flavour as it could be, and has the edge taken off it by the mayonnaise. It's good to see real egg slices in a nicoise, though. Too many otherwise fine nicoise sandwiches have been torn to pieces by gloopy, sweet or otherwise unpleasant egg mayonnaise. So the thick slices here are most welcome, and the serving is good too.
It's a slightly more exotic experience than usual with the salad. There's plenty of tomato to start things off, but then things get a bit more plush. Endive is used instead of traditional lettuce, and it's a nice choice. Though you do have to wonder whether it was used specifically because it sounds a bit more posh. And the sandwich is finished off by a few slices of olive.
However, while all these things sound great in theory, and while they certainly give this sandwich real colour, their combination is disappointing in some respects. The overall flavour has a slightly musty edge to it, and the sandwich just doesn't taste as crisp and fresh as it should. This isn't a bad sandwich by any stretch of the imagination, but there's something missing which might have given it an extra kick and a bit of character.
