All Day Breakfast Pret a Manger -- £2.60 Review posted: 30/12/2005
Too much of the good things.
I suspect this is one of the most heavy sandwiches on Pret's menu. It is literally packed with several different fillings and looks ready to burst when you open the box. All this means you are certainly well fed having eaten one, but the negative effect is that it seems like flavour overkill and the result is a bit disappointing.
There is a huge amount of egg mayonnaise in this sandwich, and it is obviously of good quality, having a strong flavour and solid texture. However, this is also one of the negatives. Quite often this sandwich is too soggy and the granary bread becomes a sponge soaking up the excess water from the mayonnaise. There is also cress in this sandwich which adds a mild yet pleasant quirk in the taste from time to time. The usual slices of fresh tomato make an appearance as does tomato ketchup.
The meat is provided by several rashers of good bacon and slices of tasty Cumberland style herby sausage, which is probably the best thing in the sandwich. Therefore it's somewhat of a shame that so much of the flavour of this sandwich is lost; I cannot even suggest why this happens. It could be the overpowering flavour of the egg, but on their own the bacon and sausage have relatively strong flavours so it's difficult to say why the egg mayonnaise subdues them. I am not convinced on the ketchup either which seems to offer a bitter aftertaste rather than complementing anything particularly well.
I suspect this is a case of over egging, literally. There is so much flavour in this sandwich but because the egg mayonnaise is the predominant one it does overpower the others to a certain degree. Occasionally when the mayonnaise isn't spread too thickly the combination of ingredients really does pay off, but sadly this is often the exception.
