Big B.L.T.
Pret a Manger -- £2.50

Review posted: 30/12/2005

So nearly a classic.

This is beyond doubt a sandwich of real quality, and it's difficult to fault on that front. However, there is something ever so slightly disappointing about it, and it's little overpriced too.

This sandwich is by and large identical to the "Super Club", without the chicken of course. The same high quality, lightly sweet-cured bacon is still present, and the portion is pretty much the same size, around 3-4 rashers. However, without the chicken a certain amount of flavour (particularly complementary flavour) has been lost.

The salad is as good as every, with plenty of fresh and tasty mixed salad leaves - in fact there is sometimes too much. The tomato is juicy with an ample serving too, and this adds the most texture to this sandwich since the slices are good and thick. The granary bread is as good as always.

I think the rich and tasty mayonnaise could well be at fault for this sandwich not getting 5 stars. In the "Super Club", this mayonnaise had chunks of chicken as well as the bacon to complement, but here it is a little overwhelming. It's still very pleasant indeed, but in essence the sandwich tastes like a "Super Club" with the chicken taken out, and that was always going to be a less interesting flavour.

This is still a high quality sandwich; the flavour is rich and the fillings are plentiful. However, it's a noticeable step down from the "Super Club" and yet it's only 20p less, which strikes me as a little odd. If you're no fan of chicken or after a tasty B.L.T. then it's still a fine choice, but it doesn't necessarily represent the best flavour or value at Pret.
