Chicken Caesar
Pret a Manger -- £2.60

Even Pret can make mistakes.

A good Caesar sandwich is often hard to come by. Usually they come across as somewhat bland as the filling really isn't designed to be packed into bread. However Pret have made a solid, if mixed attempt to combat this blandness and the result is pleasing.

The amount of chicken in the sandwich is generous and well judged as too much can often make a Caesar too heavy and stodgy. This is complemented by slices of fresh tomato, mixed lettuce and grated mature cheddar cheese. The sandwich is completed with a tasty and very rich Caesar mayonnaise and is served in Pret's standard granary.

However, despite these fine ingredients the sandwich never lives up to expectations. The flavour of the chicken and cheese is all but lost under the overpowering flavour of the mayonnaise and I suspect simply using less would solve this problem. Similarly the tomato and lettuce are left with very little to do other than provide a change in texture as their flavour really cannot come out here, which is a shame.

This is also a fairly light sandwich, and can make a refreshing and lighter alternative to the heavier and moreish Super Club. Don't get me wrong, this is a very tasty sandwich and nobody could deny that. The problem is that the very rich mayonnaise smothers everything else creating an unintentional blandness which Pret would almost certainly have been trying to avoid.
