Ham, Cheese & Mustard
Pret a Manger -- £2.65

An old classic, with some modern touches.

This is one of the more conventional sandwiches Pret make and is a very successful version of a classic sandwich. The key to any ham and cheese sandwich is to make sure that the ham and cheese used complement each other, and Pret have managed that comfortably.

The use of Greve cheese and very tasty home cooked ham is an inspired choice and serves this sandwich well. They are both somewhat mild in flavour which is welcome because they complement each other as well as having their own individual flavours. A danger is that the cheese can be too bitter and the ham can be too sweet, and thankfully that really isn't the case here. Added to this there is a delightful mustard which is the perfect strength to accompany the ham and cheese and accentuates their flavours rather than covering them up.

Also present are fresh tomato slices and mixed lettuce which adds some more crunch and taste to the sandwich. The mustard actually goes very well with these, especially the tomato, meaning the combination of flavours is a highly successful one. It comes in Pret's standard granary.

All in all, this is a traditional sandwich done very well. With a sandwich as common as this making a success out of it is a challenge and Pret have managed it. I do question the price a little, as for somewhat basic ingredients it is perhaps a trifle dear, but the great taste and flavour is likely to make you forget how much it cost.
