Smoked Salmon
Pret a Manger -- £2.70
Review posted: 01/01/2006Almost too simple. This is a very simple sandwich, and one which works very well. Unusually for Pret it only has one principal filling, but thankfully it is a very nice one.
The smoked salmon in this sandwich is quite simply delicious. Too often salmon in sandwiches is pumped full of water and preservatives, but this clearly hasn't happened here. There is a good amount of it as well and just occasionally with this sandwich there is almost too much in it.
The bread is the usual Pret granary, and it works so well with salmon. As this bread is neither too sour nor sweet, it simply serves as a delightful accompaniment to the salmon and the flavour of the bread and salmon together is fantastic. There is also a hint of lemon juice in this sandwich, which again is in just the right proportion so as not to overpower the salmon.
However, you do get the feeling after a while that this is somewhat bland. Despite being very tasty, the lack of any other real flavour does make the whole thing somewhat repetitive to eat. Perhaps a high quality cream cheese would have been a welcome addition and would certainly have added a bit more variation in flavour.
Therefore, this sandwich only gets 3 stars and has just missed out on 4. Despite having a pleasing strong flavour there is something about it which is lacking. However, it is still a highly recommended sandwich. When buying it, do get Pret's own carbonated lemon drink with it as this can really help add to the flavour and is a nice drink in it's own right.
