Review posted: 30/12/2005The Christmas Sandwich, with a twist. A sandwich which works very well, despite some very strong contrasting flavours and unusual ingredients. This sandwich seems to make rather intermittent appearances on the shelves, and the "Christmas Sandwich" is a close variation of it.
Filling is practically stuffed into this sandwich. Generous slices of moist and tasty turkey provide the backbone of this sandwich, and there is certainly plenty of it. This is complemented by a superb tasting cranberry sauce, which goes very well indeed with the turkey. Added to this is the somewhat unusual choice of spinach, but again it works well. It provides a unique flavour, a mildly bitter, but peppery taste which goes nicely with the turkey, and also with the mayonnaise which coats the bread.
Added to this are slices of juicy tomato and Greve cheese, which go together very well but also complement the other ingredients nicely and add a bit more substance to the filling.
However, there are a few problems. Quite often there is way too much cranberry sauce, and this has a detrimental effect on the bread. It can make it go very soggy and fall apart, and despite it being the good quality granary Pret normally use, there is only so much it can soak up. I have also encountered a disappointing amount of turkey in some of these, or far too much spinach, neither of which is welcome.
Overall, a successful sandwich. I was convinced this would be a disaster as on paper it seems as though there are too many conflicting flavours here. But they go so well together which makes this a very appetising and unique sandwich.
